J. Ronald Evers
I was in the consumer credit field for over 35 years. I started out as a collection manager for a company that granted small loans. I was promoted to manager of one of their offices and later to one of their larger offices.
I left to become a store credit manager for a large full line discount chain. Within a year I was promoted to Regional Credit Supervisor responsible for the credit granting in 14 stores. When the ownership changed, they sold the credit division to Citicorp and I went to work for a full line department store in New York City as collection manager.
I then went on to become a senior credit executive at a soft goods department store chain for 10 years. The company closed their US operations and I took a job a assistant general credit manager for a women’s clothing store chain. After they became an independent chain, they sold their receivable to GE Credit. After a few months off, I took a position as Credit Operations Manager for a 90 store jewelry chain on the West Coast. I took an early retirement and moved back to the east coast to be near my daughter and grandchildren. I found that I did not like the idleness of retirement and worked at various places in operations.
During my years in retail credit, I was involved in many aspects of the conversion from paper to computerized operations in the credit industry. I assisted in the installation of four credit scoring systems and one purchase scoring system. I enjoyed setting up training manuals for employees. That seems to be a lost art these days. I still keep my hand in by writing them for myself when I am doing a particularly complicated project. With the advances in MS Office, it is a lot easier to do at the present time.
In my personal life, I was a nationally certified instructor for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for 10 years. For a couple of years I ran a local program using a Commodore 128 to keep track of class schedules, instructor availability and finances. A few years ago I set up a web site for my American Legion Post. Since it is a non profit organization, I had to learn Search Engine Optimization on my own and was very successful at it. We have since transferred the operation to another member since my spare time is limited.
